Herons soar past Mustangs in UCHC opener

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team skated to a 6-1 victory over Stevenson at the Cooler this afternoon. The game was the United Collegiate Hockey Conference opener for the Herons.
 
William Smith (3-0-0, 1-0-0) scored once in the first, twice in the second, and three times in third as they improved to 2-1-1 against Stevenson all-time. Three different players had multi-point games for the Herons in the victory. Senior Jordan Roetzer led the way with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Olivia Williams played all 60 minutes in goal making 31 saves. Kellen Wittman scored the goal for Stevenson (1-3-1, 0-2-1). Annie Smyth-Hammond made 29 saves in the opening 48:42 of action for the Mustangs. Caitie Darosa made seven saves in the final 11 minutes.
 
William Smith opened the scoring 5:32 into the first period. Sophomore Jules Kennedy cashed the net and flipped a loose puck over Smyth-Hammond for her third tally of the season. Roetzer and first-year Abbey Luth were credited with assists on the goal.
 
The Mustangs tied the game 1-1 when Kellen Wittman poked home her fifth goal of the season. Nikki Kendrick and Cierra Siemasko notched assists on the goal.
 
Junior Gina Scibetta scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal at the 10:23 mark of the second period. She collected a pass from senior Maura Mulligan in the slot and wristed a shot over Smyth-Hammond's glove for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Emily Martino was also credited with an assist on the goal. Senior Stephanie Hampton gave the Herons a 3-1 lead at the 18:20 mark of the second period. Kennedy and senior Laura Rollins were credited with assists.
 
Roetzer scored the game's next two goals. She opened the third period with a tally at 1:17. Luth recorded her second assist of the game on the goal. Roetzer picked up a rebound and stuffed home the loose puck. Seven minutes later, Roetzer deked around a defenseman and wristed the shot over a sprawling Smyth-Hamond. The goals were her second and third of the season. Senior Egan Sachs-Hecht added an insurance goal at the 14:$2 mark of the period. She picked up a loose puck at he own blue lien split a pair of Mustang defenders and slid a shot between Darosa's legs for her first goal of the season.
 
William Smith finished the contest with a 42-33 edge in shots on goal. Neither team was able to capitalize on their power-play opportunities. The Herons were 0-for-1 with the extra skater while Stevenson finished the game 0-for-6.
 
The teams will wrap up the season series tomorrow afternoon at The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
