Herons plunder Pirates, give Sharman 200th win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—The William Smith College basketball team ended its West Coast swing with a 78-49 win over Whitworth University in the California Lutheran Holiday Classic. The victory was the 200th career win for Heron Head Coach Lindsay Sharman.

Sophomore Juliana Gamboa scored a game-high 21 points and classmate Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou posted her second straight double-double on 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior Mia Morrison contributed 11 points. The Herons (4-4) shot 50 percent from the floor with eight 3-pointers and enjoyed a 48-34 rebounding advantage. Both teams committed 19 turnovers in the game, but William Smith was able to turn the Pirate miscues into 25 points while Whitworth managed just 12 points off Herons turnovers.

William Smith limited the Pirates to 26 percent shooting with no individual reaching double figures. Madison Abbott and Madison Moffat scored eight points apiece for Whitworth (6-4).

The Herons seized the lead for good just three minutes into the contest when Gamboa dialed long-distance to break a 5-all tie. William Smith led by as many as five in the opening quarter before carrying a 17-13 lead after 10 minutes.

Four minutes into the second quarter, Jordan Smith connected on a 3-pointer to make it a 1-point game, 22-21. The Herons responded with nine straight points to open a 10-point lead. First-year Alyssa Sands sank a 3-pointer and Gamboa, first-year Amy Dooley and Dimitrakopoulou added 2-point shots. Abbott snapped the run with the final bucket of the first half, trimming William Smith's lead to 31-23.

Dimitrakopoulou had game-highs of 11 points and five boards at the half.

Dimitrakopoulou made a 3-pointer to start the second half scoring and Gamboa followed with back-to-back field goals expanding the Heron lead to 15. A 16-4 run to end the third quarter gave William Smith a 59-34 lead.

The game was the Herons' final contest of the calendar year and final non-conference game of the season. William Smith begins a three-game Liberty League homestand at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, hosting RIT.
