#21 Hobart extends win streak to 15 with late push past Vassar

GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 21 Hobart College basketball team took the lead for good on a clutch 3-pointer by junior Colin Dougherty with just over a minute remaining to extend its program record winning streak to 15 games tonight. The Statesmen held off Vassar College 79-74 in Liberty League action in Bristol Gym.

The Brewers built a five-point lead, 73-68, with about three minutes remaining in the game, but the tide started to turn in Hobart's favor just a few seconds later. Sophomore Sam Allen made a layup for the Statesmen, narrowing the gap to three and moments later junior center Paul Grinde fouled out. Vassar's leading scorer took a seat with 23 points and 2:26 remaining in the game.

Hobart junior Jamal Lucas made one of two free throws to make it a two-point game with 1:40 to go. On the defensive end of the floor, sophomore Edens Fleurizard blocked his fourth shot of the game and first-year Dan Masino secured the rebound, leading to Dougherty's 3-pointer from the left corner that gave the Statesmen a 74-73 lead.

From there, Hobart was 5-of-8 at the free throw line, earning its 21st win of the season (21-3, 16-1 LL). Dougherty led the Statesmen with a season-high matching 25 points, including a 10-of-14 effort at the free throw line. Sophomore Tucker Lescoe added 22 points, including six 3-pointers. He moved into a tie for fourth place on Hobart's single season list with 66 3-pointers made this season. Lucas had 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.

In addition to Grinde, Vassar (8-16, 7-10 LL) got 21 points from senior Jesse Brown, who connected on five 3-pointers and 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds from first-year center Zach Bromfeld, who fouled out with 12 seconds left.

The Brewers outrebounded the Statesmen 41-30, but Hobart committed a season-low six turnovers while forcing 14 Vassar miscues. The Statesmen also had a sizeable advantage at the free throw line, making 18-of-29 while the visitors made 9-of-11.

Hobart led by six at halftime and as many as 10 early in the second half, but the Brewers rallied with 17-4 run, taking a 58-61 lead on a 3-pointer by Browne with 7:31 remaining.

Hobart will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 17, when Union College (15-8, 11-6) comes to Bristol Gym. Prior to tipoff at 4 p.m., the Statesmen will honor the team's two seniors, Luke Ruddy and Isaiah Young. Vassar will wrap up the regular season at Ithaca tomorrow.
