Herons clip Red Dragons in regular season finale

CORTLAND, N.Y-The William Smith College ice hockey team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-1 victory over Cortland in non-conference action this afternoon. The Herons conclude their regular season with a 16-5-4 overall record.

Senior goalie Maggie Salmon stopped 31 shots for William Smith as she improves to 13-4-4 on the season. Three different players scored the goals for William Smith this afternoon.

Today's game was William Smith's 100th as a varsity program. It was also the 100th career game for seniors Rebecca Begley and Krista Federow. They are the only two players to have seen the ice in all 100 of the Herons games.

Federow opened the scoring with her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Her goal at 7:07 of the first period was assisted by sophomore Gina Scibetta and junior Stephanie Hampton. Federow redirected a centering pass across the goal line for the 40th goal of her career.

The Herons doubled their lead halfway through the second period. First-year Jules Kennedy fired home a power-play goal from the right faceoff circle. Her sixth goal of the season was assisted by first-year Emily Martino and junior Laura Rollins. Senior Kiley Fewster added a short-handed goal at the 18:03 mark of the middle period. The goal was her 11th of the season and program best fourth short-handed goal of her career.

The Red Dragons (8-15-2) struck at the 13:49 mark of the third period. Charlie Calamari pounced on a rebound and flipped the puck across the goal line. Miranda Kolb and Samantha Pippin were credited with assists on Calamari's fifth goal of the season.

Rachael Farmer made 21 saves, playing 59:25 in goal for Cortland.

The Red Dragons finished the game with a 32-24 edge in shots on goal. Cortland was 1-for-7 on the power play while William Smith was 1-for-5 with the extra attacker.

William Smith will be back in action March 3, when it travels to Pine Valley, N.Y. for a UCHC semifinal contest. The Herons earned a first round bye in the conference tournament after posting an 11-2-3 record in conference play. William Smith will play the highest remaining seed from this weekend's quarterfinal matchups. Elmira, as the regular season champion, will face the lowest remaining seed in the other semifinal.
