ITHACA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior
Mia Morrison produced game-highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds, but Ithaca College topped the Herons 80-63 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament this evening. William Smith ends the season with a 15-11 overall record while the Bombers improve to 20-6.
Morrison made 12-of-26 shots from the floor and sank 3-of-4 at the free throw line. It was her 10th double-double of the season, tied for the most in the Liberty League. Sophomore
Emma Gallagher added 13 points, seven rebounds, a team-high four assists and a team-high three steals. First-year
Juliana Gamboa chipped in 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Ithaca had five players in double digits. Meghan Pickell led the Bombers with 17 points. Allie Tunick contributed 15 points. Cassidy O'Malley made a bid for a triple double, posting 14 points, eight rebounds, and eight blocked shots. Annie Giannone scored 13 points and handed out a game-high nine assists. Julie Yacovoni had 11 points, nine boards, and three blocked shots.
William Smith hung with Ithaca in the first quarter, taking a 19-18 lead on
Olivia Hughes layup with less than a minute to go, but Yacovoni completed a traditional 3-point play and Giannone made the final basket of the frame for a 23-19 lead after one.
The Bombers kept rolling to start the second quarter, scoring the first 11 points to build a 15-point lead. Five different Ithaca players scored during the surge. The Bombers were able to maintain a double digit advantage throughout the rest of the half, taking a 45-31 lead into the break.
O'Malley led all scorers at halftime with 11 points and seven blocked shots. Morrison paced the Herons with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
In the third quarter, the Bombers ran their advantage out to as many as 19, taking a 55-36 lead on a 3-pointer by Giannone, but William Smith kept fighting. The Herons ended the quarter on an 11-4 run, fueled by six points from Morrison, to close the gap to 59-47 with one quarter remaining.
Gamboa opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to get William Smith within nine. The teams traded baskets to keep it a nine-point game, but then Giannone came up with a steal that led to a trip to the free throw line for O'Malley. She made one to push the Bomber lead into double digits where it stayed for the rest of the game.
Morrison finished the season with 489 points, sixth on the Herons' single season list. She also made 116 free throws this year, fourth on the William Smith season list. Morrison's 237 rebounds this year are seventh on the season list.
