Herons rally to tie #3 Elmira 2-2

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team scored two goals in the third period to secure a 2-2 tie with third ranked Elmira at the Murray Athletic Center this afternoon. Senior Maggie Salmon stood tall in goal for the Herons, recording a season-high 50 saves.
 
Junior Stephanie Hampton and sophomore Taylor Morash scored the goals for William Smith (13-4-4, 9-1-3). Meghan Fonfara and Katie Granato had a game-high two points (1g, 1a) for Elmira (16-2-2, 10-0-1).
 
Down by two goals, Hampton started the comeback for the Herons with a goal 49 seconds into the third period. She forced a turnover in the offensive zone and flipped the shot past Kelcey Crawford. The unassisted goal was her ninth of the season. Just before the midway point of the period Morash tied the game with her fifth goal of the season. She picked up a rebound in front of the goal and deflected the puck across the goal line.  Senior Kiley Fewster was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
Elmira opened the scoring 7:01 into the first period when Fonfara fired home her eighth goal of the season, beating a screened Salmon. Granato and Devyn Gilman were credited with assists on the goal. The Soaring Eagles finished the first period with a 15-9 edge in shots on goal.
 
Granato doubled Elmira's lead with her 17th goal of the season, 3:32 into the second period. Fonfara and Maddie Evangelous were credited with assists on the goal. The Soaring Eagles continued to apply pressure but could not get another shot behind Salmon.
 
Hampton had William Smith's best scoring opportunity in the extra session but her wrist shot was turned aside by Crawford. Elmira had seven shots on goal in overtime, including two by Shannon Strawinski that forced Salmon to make highlight reel saves.
 
Crawford finished the game with 23 saves in 65 minutes for Elmira.
 
The Herons were 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Soaring Eagles were 1-for-6.
 
William Smith and Elmira remain tied atop the UCHC standings with 21 points and will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
