Aslanian, Scott combine for 11 goals at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Junior Chris Aslanian and sophomore Justin Scott combined for 11 goals and four assists to lead the Hobart College lacrosse team to a 19-9 win at Canisius College tonight. Aslanian notched a season-high nine points on five goals and four assists, while Scott netted six goals, matching the Statesmen Division I game record for the second time this season.

The Statesmen (4-5) dominated the contest, outshooting the Golden Griffins 46-19. Hobart enjoyed a 34-16 advantage in ground balls and a 24-7 edge in faceoffs. Junior Matthew Pedicine was 22-of-29 at the X and collected a game-high 12 ground balls. First-year Ryan Archer added two goals and an assist, junior Bryan Hancock scored twice and junior Stanny Gilbertson chipped in a goal and an assist. Junior Gerald Flood, sophomore Eric Holden and first-year Tommy Mott accounted for the other three Hobart goals.

Aslanian opened the night's scoring, but the Statesmen trailed Canisius 2-1 midway through the opening frame. Hobart reclaimed the lead with three straight goals in a span of just 89 seconds. Gilbertson and Hancock scored 58 seconds apart and Scott capped the run 31 seconds later. The Griffs stopped the run to make it a 4-3 game, but the Statesmen fired home the final two goals of the quarter for a 6-3 lead. Scott notched his second goal with just over a minute to go and Aslanian netted a buzzer beater to complete Hobart's most productive opening quarter of the season.

The teams traded goals in the first 13 minutes of the second quarter, upping the score to 8-6. The Statesmen ended the half with a flourish, scoring three times in the final 95 seconds. Archer fed Aslanian to start the run, then Scott scored back-to-back goals, the first was unassisted and the second was set up by Aslanian just four seconds before the half for an 11-6 lead. Aslanian had a game-high six points (4g,2a) in the first half.

Canisius (4-4) scored the opening goal of the second half to get within four, but Hobart answered twice before another minute ran off the clock and never looked back. Up 14-8 at the end of three quarters, the Statesmen outscored the Griffs 5-1 in the final 15 minutes to complete the scoring.

The 19 goals are the most scored by Hobart since beating Presbyterian 19-4 in 2008. It's the most goals by the Statesmen against Canisius since hanging 22 on the Griffins in 2006.

Hobart will be back in action on Tuesday, April 3, when the Statesmen travel to Syracuse. Faceoff in the Carrier Dome is scheduled for 7 p.m.
