GENEVA, N.Y.-The 13th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team rolled to a 14-5 non-conference victory over 17th-ranked Hamilton on Boswell Field this afternoon.
Three players recorded hat tricks for the Herons in the victory. Senior
Sarah Benyo recorded a game-high four points on three goals and one assist. First-year
Kelsey Williams notched her first career hat-trick while junior
Bizzer Gahagan collected the third hat trick of her career. Sophomore
Nicki Santora pitched in a goal and an assist. First-year
Ellen Arena brought in a game-high four ground balls while first-year
Anna Murphy won a game-high five draws. Fellow first-year
Olivia Hofmann made three saves, collecting her first collegiate victory.
Charlotte Wynn led the way for the Continentals (0-2) with two goals. Kara Pooley and Emma Knoll each brought in three groundballs while Skyler Simson and Darby Philbrick each won three draws. Hannah Burrall made nine saves in goal for Hamilton.
William Smith (1-1) built a 7-2 lead in the first half. Gahagan opened the scoring 2:26 into the game, when she scooped up a ground ball in front of the cage and shot it past Burrall. Benyo doubled the Herons lead three minutes later with her first goal of the season. Hamilton answered 50 seconds later when Wynn fired home a free position shot. William Smith rattled off the next three goals. Williams' first goal of the game gave the Herons a 3-1 lead. Gahagan's second goal of the game came 68 seconds later off a feed from Benyo. Senior
Ali Burns scored her second goal of the season with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Courtney Pierre ended the Herons' run 67 seconds later. Williams and senior

Tessa Ryan opened the second half with a goal at the 28:15 mark. The Herons proceeded to score seven of the game's final nine goals. Gahagan completed her hat trick 4 minutes into the second half while Benyo scored William Smith's next two goals to complete her hat trick. Anna Murphy wrapped up the scoring with goals at 14:42 and 6:42, respectively.
William Smith finished with a 31-11 edge in shots, a 28-15 edge in ground balls and an 11-10 edge in draw controls. The Herons were 18-for-24 clearing the ball while Hamilton was 16-for-27.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, March 10, when it welcomes Nazareth to Boswell Field. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
