Pedicine breaks faceoff mark in finale

GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior Matthew Pedicine broke the Hobart Division I season record for faceoff percentage with another dominating performance at the X today. He won 13-of-19 faceoffs against Sacred Heart, finishing the season with a .659 winning percentage.

The Statesmen suffered a 10-6 defeat to the Pioneers in their season finale on Boswell Field this afternoon. SHU (7-7, 3-3) clinched the final spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament while Hobart ends the season 5-9 overall, 1-5 in the conference.

SHU junior Max Tuttle scored three times in the first quarter, leading the visitors to a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes. He finished the day with a game-high four goals. Six other Pioneers each scored once. Sophomore goalie Brooks Dutton made 14 saves to earn the win. Junior defenseman Joseph Cipoletti contributed a game-high four caused turnovers.

In addition to surpassing Bobby Dattilo's record of .649 in 2011, Pedicine also collected a game-high 10 ground balls. He finished the year with 189 faceoff wins, second among DI Statesmen, and 101 ground balls. He's the first Hobart player to grab 100 ground balls in a season since Alex Mitchell '99 had 100 in 1997. Only Eric Curry has picked up more (115) for the Statesmen in the DI era.

Hobart got a hat trick from sophomore Justin Scott, who posted a team-high 32 goals this season, tied for ninth among Division I Statesmen. Seniors Mason Burr and Owen Smith and sophomore Eric Holden each scored once.

Holden opened the day's scoring his 22nd goal of the season just before the shot clock expired, 1:45 into the game. Tuttle answered with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart. Burr tied the game just over five minutes into the game. Sacred Heart reclaimed the lead for good with three straight goals in a span of three minutes. Senior TJ Fitzell started the run with an unassisted goal. Two minutes later, Jaden Walcot scored with the extra-man followed less than a minute later by another Tuttle goal to make it a 5-2 game. Scott posted his first goal of the day at the 4:25 mark to close out the first quarter scoring.

Scott opened the second quarter scoring to get Hobart within one, but the Pioneers scored twice just before halftime to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. Tuttle fired home the first for his league-leading 44th goal of the year.

Scott opened the third quarter scoring as well, over 10 minutes into the second half, but SHU got it back three minutes later making it an 8-5 game heading into the final frame.

Ninety seconds into the fourth quarter, the game was halted for a lightning delay. When play resumed 30 minutes later, the Pioneers kept the Statesmen from closing ground until less than six minutes remained. Smith fired home his first career goal with under six minutes left in the game to cut the SHU lead to 8-6. Sacred Heart dashed Hobart's hopes of a comeback with two more goals about a minute apart to complete the scoring.
