#7 Herons wrangle Mustangs

GENEVA, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Stevenson University to cap an undefeated opening weekend. Sophomore Julia Keogh led the way with a goal and an assist against the Mustangs.

Keogh, who also scored a goal in yesterday's 2-0 triumph over Hardin-Simmons, opened Saturday's scoring in the 33rd minute. With her back to the goal, she received a throw-in from senior Megan Barwick. Keogh spun left off her defender and roofed a shot from the far left of the box.

In the 60th minute, Keogh had another scoring opportunity, but elected to make one more pass. She took a pass from classmate Merilyn Henrichs and quickly moved it on to sophomore Sheila McQuillen who rewarded the unselfish play by burying the feed.

"I have to say, Julia really took the summer as an opportunity for her to improve her game," Head Coach Aliceann Wilber said. "She worked and it was immediately noticeable, the gains she's made as a player. I'm thrilled for her that she's having that kind of start because she worked for it."

Sophomore Maialen Martinez scored the middle goal for the Herons (2-0-0). William Smith was fouled in front of its own bench, earning a free kick. Junior Emilie Sauvayre delivered a perfect strike into the middle of the box for Martinez who headed home her first collegiate goal.

The Heron defense notched its second straight shutout, limiting the Mustangs (0-2-0) to just two shots. First-year goalkeeper Amanda Kesler when the distance for William Smith without making a save, but she did make several sure-handed plays on Stevenson crosses. The Mustangs had their best scoring chance of the match in the 73rd minute, but junior Marissa Inglisa's shot ricocheted harmlessly off the crossbar.

Sophomore Keegan Caffrey made nine saves for Stevenson.

William Smith will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it travels to No. 5 Messiah.
