Craig’s hat trick leads Herons over Flyers

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team scored the first three goals of the game on the way to a 5-3 win at Nazareth College this evening. The Herons were led by sophomore Sophie Craig's first three career goals.

After starting the first three games of the season on defense, Head Coach Sally Scatton moved Craig back to forward today and the move paid immediate dividends as Craig recorded the first three goals of her collegiate career. The outburst moved her into a tie for the team scoring lead with senior Fallon Adair.

Adair scored her third goal of the young season just over four minutes into the game. In the 12th minute, Craig netted her first for a 2-0 lead. Senior Sierramarie Fitzgerald made it three straight for the Herons, netting her first goal of the season in the 26th minute.

Nazareth (2-3) got on the board with just under six minutes left in the opening half when Jennifer Hilts tallied her third goal of the year.

William Smith enjoyed a 12-5 advantage in shots in the first half and finished the day with a 21-11 edge.

In the 50th minute, the Golden Flyers pulled to within one when Emily Rosenberg produced her first goal of the season, but Craig quickly restored the Herons' two-goal edge. Adair worked the ball along the end line from the left wing and, as the defense closed in, fed Craig in front, who put the ball in the back of the cage. The Manlius native completed her hat trick just over three minutes later for a 5-2 William Smith lead.

Mikaylee Whalen, who assisted on Rosenburg's goal, netted a goal of her own in the 63rd minute to cap the day's scoring.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra DeVito earned the win for William Smith. She made three saves in the first half before yielding the crease to first-year Anna McCarthy to start the second half. She turned away three of the five shots she faced, before DeVito returned to close out the final five minutes.

Nazareth also used two goalkeepers. Amanda Chuttey had five first half saves and Kimber Nourse logged four stops in the second half.

The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 15-16, when they host the annual William Smith Classic. The Herons will open play against Manhattanville on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
