CORTLAND, N.Y.—The nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland field hockey team shut out William Smith College 4-0 this afternoon.
The Red Dragons (5-3) scored on their first two shots on goal, taking a 1-0 lead on senior Jess Gibaldi's strike in the 16th minute and extending the advantage in the 20th minute when junior Hannah Burchell hit the back of the cage on a penalty corner. Cortland added another goal before halftime for a 3-0 advantage after 35 minutes. The Red Dragons tacked on their final goal just 12 seconds into the second half.
Gibaldi finished with a goal and an assist as did first-year Alanie Genter.
First-year
Anna McCarthy played the final 50:53 in goal for William Smith stopping five of the seven shots she faced. Kailynne Reinoehl recorded two saves for Cortland to earn the win.
The Herons (3-5) will return home to take on Liberty League rival Union during HWS Homecoming and Family Weekend. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 on McCooey Field.
