William Smith soars past King’s 10-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team defeated King's 10-0 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are 12-3-0 overall and 10-0-0 in conference play.

William Smith was led offensively by the line of sophomore Jules Kennedy (2g, 3a), first-year Abbey Luth (1g, 4a), and junior Gina Scibetta (3g, 1a) who combined for 14 of the Herons' 28 points in the game. Sophomore Julia Mings added a pair goals while senior Stephanie Hampton had three assists for the second consecutive game. Sophomore Olivia Williams made 18 saves, including 12 in the third period as she notched her second straight shutout. Kiva Sierra Stoltz and Emma Zeveney split time in goal for the Monarchs (1-14-0, 0-10-0). Stoltz made 29 saves while Zeveney made 26 saves.

The Herons opened the scoring at the 4:14 mark of the first period when Mings connected on her 12th goal of the season. Senior Maura Mulligan forced a turnover in the neutral zone and tapped a pass to Hampton in the center circle. Hampton left a drop pass for Mings, who carried the puck into the offensive zone. She wristed a shot from the point over Stoltz's blocker and into the upper left corner of the goal. Five minutes later, senior Laura Rollins gave the Herons a 2-0 lead. She fired a one-timer from the high slot into the back of the net. Kennedy and Luth were credited with assists on the goal. Mulligan's third goal of the season extended the lead to 3-0. She snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle over Stoltz's glove. Mings and Hampton were credited with assists on the goal.

William Smith erupted for five goals in the second period. Kennedy and Scibetta each had two tallies in the period. Kennedy opened the scoring at the 1:22 mark of the period. Sophomore Lexi Nottke fired a shot from the point that deflected off of Kennedy's back, floated over Stoltz and into the net. Scibetta's first goal of the game came at the 9:17 of the second period. She collected her own rebound right in front and tapped it across the goal line. Kennedy and Luth were credited with assists on the goal. Two minutes later, Kennedy fired home her second goal of the game from a tight angle along the goal line. Rollins and Scibetta picked up assists on the power-play goal. Just under four minutes later, Scibetta added her second goal of the game, banging home a loose puck. Luth and Kennedy assisted Scibetta's 10th goal of the season.  Mings' added her second goal of the game 83 seconds later. She wristed a shot from the slot past Zeveney for her 13th goal of the season. Hampton's team leading 14th assist of the season set up the goal.

Luth and Scibetta added goals in the third period to ice the game for William Smith. Luth's team leading 14th goal of the season was assisted by sophomore Egan Sachs-Hecht and first-year Anna Krajewski. Luth deked around a defender and backhanded a shot from the right faceoff circle past Zeveney at the 5:21 mark of the period. Scibetta completed her hat trick three minutes later with her 11th goal of the season. Luth was awarded an assist on the goal.

King's had chances to break the shutout in the third period but Williams was up to the task, stopping all 12 Monarchs shots in the third period. Gracen Mahoney had a breakaway opportunity two minutes into the period but she could not slide her backhand shot past Williams.

William Smith finished the game with a 65-18 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Monarchs were 0-for-4 with the extra attacker. William Smith has killed off 21 consecutive penalties.

The Herons hit the road for a pair of games next weekend, Jan. 19-20, when they take on Manhattanville. Faceoff on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. while Sunday's game will start at 3 p.m.
