GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team got a pair of double-doubles from senior
Jamal Lucas and junior
Edens Fleurizard as the Statesmen never trailed in a 78-67 Liberty League win over Clarkson University in Bristol Gym tonight. Hobart improved to 9-6 overall, 6-2 in the conference while the Golden Knights slip to 3-12, 2-6.
Lucas poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out three assists. Fleurizard scored 14 points and pulled down a career and game-high 14 boards. He also blocked two shots to raise his season total to 33, tied for ninth on Hobart's single season list. Junior
Tucker Lescoe made a bid for a double-double as well, finishing with 20 points and a career-high seven assists. He sank four of Hobart's seven 3-pointers on the night. Senior
Colin Dougherty added 10 points.
Clarkson had two players in double figures led by first-year Chris Hulbert's 15 points off the bench. Junior Matt Higgins scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high five boards.
Hobart scored the first two baskets of the game on a layup by Fleurizard and a 3-pointer from senior
Sean McKinless, sparking a 14-5 run to open the action. The Statesmen ended the half with a flurry as well, scoring the final seven points to take a 43-28 lead into the locker room. Lucas hit a triple and then converted a layup followed by a layup by first-year
Jackson Meshanic. Hobart enjoyed a 28-16 scoring advantage in the paint.
Dougherty opened the second half scoring on a jumper and Lescoe connected from long range to give the Statesmen their largest lead of the night, 48-28. Although Hobart maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half, the Golden Knights didn't allow the Statesmen to cruise. Hulbert made a free throw with about six and a half minutes to go, trimming Hobart's lead to 10, but the Statesmen responded to the threat with seven straight points. A pair of free throws by Lescoe, a layup by Lucas and a traditional 3-point play by McKinless ran Hobart advantage out to 17, 74-57, with under five minutes to play.
For the game, Hobart shot 48.1 percent to Clarkson's 30.3 percent. The Statesmen also had a slight edge beyond the 3-point arc (33.3% to 30.8%) and at the free throw line (86.4% to 75%). Hobart dominated the glass, outrebounding Clarkson 49-26.
Hobart is back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Statesmen host league-leading St. Lawrence (10-5, 7-1). The Saints earned a 55-54 win at RIT tonight.
