GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team cruised to a 71-33 victory over visiting Clarkson University in Bristol Gym tonight. The Herons broke the program record for rebounds in a game, collecting 69 caroms, two more than the previous mark set nearly 34 years ago.
All 12 Herons registered at least one rebound in the game. Sophomore
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou collected a team-high 10 boards. Classmate
Kyesha Talerico added nine rebounds. William Smith grabbed 24 boards on the offensive glass, and enjoyed a 19-8 advantage in second chance points. The previous record for rebounds by the Herons was 67 set at Binghamton on Feb. 13, 1985.
The Herons, who posted their fifth straight win, used a suffocating defense to limit the Golden Knights to a season-low 16.4 percent shooting performance, including 5-of-39 from behind the 3-point line.
After building a 14-11 lead through the end of the first quarter, the Herons dominated the second quarter, scoring the first 17 points of the frame. Morrison had seven points in the run, while senior
Olivia Hughes added four. While William Smith was 7-of-12 from the floor in the first six minutes of the quarter, the Knights missed their first eight shots. The Herons led 34-17 at halftime.
The third quarter bore a striking resemblance to the second as William Smith outscored Clarkson 19-7. The Golden Knights made just two field goals in the frame.
Heron senior
Mia Morrisono was the game's leading scorer with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting. First-year
Olivia Parisi added a season-high 11 points. Eleven of the 12 William Smith players scored at least a point.
Junior Molly Stewart led Clarkson with 11 points and first-year Maddie Pratt grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
William Smith returns to action at noon on Saturday, Jan. 19, when the Herons host St. Lawrence (6-9, 3-5). The Saints are coming off a 72-51 loss at RIT tonight.
