RYE, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team scored four times in the second period on its way to defeating Manhattanville 6-3 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at the Playland Ice Casino this afternoon. After this weekend's split with the Valiants, the Herons are now 13-4-0 overall on the year and 11-1-0 in conference play.
Â
First-year
Abbey Luth continued her impressive rookie campaign, recording her second career hat trick. Luth added an assist to finish with a game-high four points. Junior
Gina Scibetta and sophomore
Jules Kennedy each added a goal and an assist to finish with multi-point games. Sophomore

Â
Luth wasted little time putting the Herons in front. She scored her 15th goal of the season 59 seconds into the game. She picked up a loose puck along the boards and wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle that trickled through Pijaca's pads and across the goal line. Luth's goal came on William Smith's first shot of the game.
Â
The Herons had a chance to double their lead late in the period when Manhattanville was called for a trio of penalties at the 17:57 mark. The Herons fired six shots on goal during the two skater advantage but Pijaca made two saves and Ali Howard blocked two shots. The Valiants nearly tied the game during that stretch when Janet Xu broke into the offensive zone. Williams turned aside the shorthanded bid.
Â
Manhattanville tied the game at one just past the six minute mark of the second period. Xu one-timed a shot from the point through traffic past Williams for her fifth goal of the season. The power-play goal was assisted by Tianna Lopes and Amanda Sabia.
Â
William Smith took the lead for good just under two minutes later. Luth poked home a loose puck for her 16th goal of the season. Her shot from the left faceoff circle trickled past Pijaca. Scibetta made it 3-1 at 13:30 of the second period. She wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle past the goalie. The unassisted power-play goal was her 14th of the season.
Â
Amanda Sabia's 12th goal of the season made it a 3-2 game. Lopes was credited with an assist on the goal.
Â
The Herons put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the next 71 seconds. Luth completed the hat trick 19 seconds after Sabia's goal. Her 17th goal of the season was assisted by Scibetta and Kennedy. One minute later Kennedy scored a goal of her own. She crashed the net and poked home a rebound for her 13th goal of the season.
Â
Down by three goals, Manhattanville opted to pull its goalie following a William Smith penalty with eight minutes remaining in regulation. The move paid off as Sabia added a power-play goal at the 12:49 mark of the third period. Her second goal of the game was assisted by Lopes and Ali Howard.
Â
Sophomore
Emily Martino added an empty net goal for the Herons with just over a minute remaining in the game. Fellow sophomore
Julia Mings was credited with an assist on Martino's fifth goal of the season.
Â
Manhattanville finished the game with a 46-33 edge in shots on goal. Both teams scored twice on the power play and were 2-for-8 with the extra attacker. It was the first time in six games that William Smith has allowed a power play goal and the first time an opponent scored two power-play goals in a game this season.
Â
The Herons will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 26-27, when they take on top-ranked Elmira in a home-and-home series. Saturday's game will be in Pine Valley, N.Y., at 3 p.m. while Sunday's game will be at The Cooler at 4 p.m.
