Fast start propels Tigers over Herons

HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The Rochester Institute of Technology used a 30-6 opening run to propel itself to a 78-57 Liberty League women's basketball victory over William Smith College this afternoon. The Tigers improved to 11-6 overall, 6-4 in conference play, while the Herons fall to 10-7, 6-5.
 
RIT scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back. The Tigers made 10 of their first 18 shots from the floor, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while limiting William Smith to 2-of-9 shooting with six turnovers. Senior Tara Lynch and sophomore Sabrina Wolfe powered the charge, contributing eight and seven points, respectively.
 
The Herons scored nine straight points in the latter stages of the second quarter to threaten a comeback. First-year Stella Davis sank a pair of 3s and contributed seven points to the surge, but the Tigers countered with a 7-2 run going into halftime with a 44-23 lead.
 
RIT led by at least 21 throughout the second half.
 
Senior Mia Morrison led William Smith with 19 points and seven rebounds. Junior Annaliese Schreder matched her career-high with 10 points. She was 4-of-5 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers. First-year Christina Mitrow handed out a career-high five assists.
 
Wolfe logged a game-high 25 points and secured 10 rebounds for the Tigers. Brooke Stanley added 16 points and Lynch finished with 12 points. Alyssa Juergens pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
 
William Smith will play the middle game of its five-game road trip on Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Herons will tip off at Rensselaer (9-8, 4-6) at 5 p.m. The Engineers defeated Skidmore 74-64 this afternoon.
