Game Recap: Hobart Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Statesmen shut out Bears 3-0, win 4th straight

GENEVA, N.Y.-First-year Aaron Maguyon scored twice and Junior Alexander Connal made 27 saves as the 15th-ranked Hobart College hockey team defeated Potsdam 3-0 in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With their fourth consecutive victory, the Statesmen are now 10-4-0 overall on the season.

Senior Jack Macnee and sophomore TJ Schultz recorded assists on both of Maguyon's goals, sharing game-high honors with two points each. Connal earned his second consecutive shutout. Michael Paglucca made 30 saves in goal for the Bears (6-8-0).

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period. Potsdam finished the first 20 minutes with a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Nate Zweig had the Bear's best scoring opportunity just over three minutes into the period but he fired his shot from the left faceoff circle off of the left goal post.

The Statesmen broke the dead lock just over two minutes into the second period when Maguyon pocketed his first goal of the game. With Hobart already on a power play, Potsdam was whistled for too many players on the ice, giving the Statesmen a two-man advantage. Zach Tyson won the faceoff and got the puck deep in the attacking zone. Schultz picked up a loose puck in the left faceoff circle and slid a pass to Macnee at the point. Macnee sent the puck along the blue line to Maguyon, who fired a shot through traffic and into the back of the net.

Potsdam had a pair of chances to tie the game at one but Connal turned aside both scoring opportunities. Zweig had his second scoring opportunity of the game when he forced a turnover in the slot with nine minutes remaining in the period. His wrist shot from point blank range was turned aside by Connal. At the 15 minute mark, Tyler Young had a shot from the hash marks stopped by Connal.

Senior Jonas Toupal doubled Hobart's lead at 16:32 of the second period. He collected a pass in the slot from junior Lawson MacDougall and wristed a shot off the left post and across the goal line. It was Toupal's team leading 10th goal of the season. Senior Matt Pizzo was also credited with an assist on the goal.

Maguyon added an insurance goal for the Statesmen at 4:43 of the third period. He redirected a Macnee shot from the point past Paglucca. It was Maguyon's fourth goal of the season. Schultz was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.

Hobart finished the game with a 33-27 edge in shots on goal. Hobart was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Bears were 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.

The teams will wrap up the season series tomorrow afternoon. Faceoff at The Cooler is scheduled for 4 p.m.
