POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. —William Smith College junior goalkeeper
Alexandra DeVito saved 15 shots against ninth-ranked Vassar this evening. The Brewers scored twice in the first half to win 2-0. The Herons fall to 4-8 overall, and 1-3 in conference play. Vassar improves to 11-2 overall, and 3-1 in Liberty League play.
DeVito made five saves in the first quarter, but the Brewers scored 13 minutes in when Stephanie Palma inserted a corner to Rylie Pope. Three minutes into the second quarter, Grace Amell increased the Brewers lead to 2-0.
The Herons were close to scoring in the third quarter. Two minutes in, first-year
Lauren Jackson fired off a shot, but it hit the crossbar. Shortly after, senior
Kelsey Pierce took a penalty stroke, but missed wide. William Smith continued to shoot, and junior
Sophie Craig's shot was stopped after Sophie McGrath made a defensive save.
Jackson helped hold the Brewers to two with a defensive save after stopping a shot from Pope. Jackson now leads the team with three defensive saves.
Vassar had a 24-19 advantage in shots, and led 13-6 in penalty corners. Craig led the Herons with seven shots, putting five on goal.
With 15 saves, DeVito tied her season high record. She also made 15 stops in William Smith's season opener against St. John Fisher. Julianna Smith made nine saves for the win.
The Herons will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 20, when they host Rensselaer on McCooey Field for a Liberty League game at noon.
