Cary nets 2, Hobart tops Union 3-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.-Hobart College senior Nate Cary scored twice as Hobart defeated Union 3-1 in a Liberty League contest on College Park Field this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 10-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Liberty League play while the Dutchmen fall to 9-5-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play.

Cary opened the scoring in the 21st minute of the game. He forced a turnover in the offensive half of the field and fired a shot into the back of the net. The unassisted goal was his fourth of the season. Senior Tristan Cornell Roberts nearly doubled the lead in the 29th minute, but his shot just missed the right goal post.

Union nearly tied the game in the 44th minute, but Salvador Lopez's shot was stopped by Brian Salazar.

The Dutchmen tested the Statesmen defense to start the second half but could not find the back of the net. Evan Farr had a shot stopped by Salazar and Josue Blas missed a pair of shots wide right.

Cary notched his second goal of the game in the 60th minute. He one-timed a Cooper O'Connell centering pass into the back of the net for his team leading fifth goal of the season. In the 67th minute, senior Kyle Patrick extended the lead to 3-0 with his first goal of the season. He collected a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and buried a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.

Union broke up the shutout bid in the 90th minute. Following a foul in the box, Ben Weinstein stepped up and fired a penalty kick into the left corner of the net. It was his first goal of the season.

The Dutchmen finished the game with a slight 14-13 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Salazar made four saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Statesmen. At the opposite end of the pitch, Trevor Krupp made one save for Union.

Hobart will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 22, when they travel to take on Utica. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
