Schafer nets 2, Herons soar past Golden Flyers 3-1

GENEVA, N.Y. —The William Smith College field hockey team defeated Nazareth 3-1 this evening on McCooey Field. Sophomore Emma Schafer scored her first two collegiate goals, and first-year Mackenzie Wodka recorded one goal and one assist. The Herons improve to 3-6 overall this season, and Nazareth falls to 4-6.

William Smith dominated the game offensively, recording 29 shots, and holding Nazareth to eight. The Herons edged the Golden Flyers in penalty corners 5-4.

William Smith found the back of the net quick, scoring less than three minutes into the game. Senior Kelsey Pierce controlled the ball in the midfield, and found junior Sophie Craig at the top of the shooting circle. Craig blasted a shot off, and Schafer got her stick on it to score her first career goal.

Nazareth tied the game when they took advantage of a penalty corner.  Natalie L'Hommedieu took the corner for the Golden Flyers and found Mikaylee Whalen at the top of the arc. Whalen was able to get her shot past junior Alexandra DeVito to even the score 1-1.

Craig had a goal scoring opportunity with five minutes left in the third quarter. Pierce took the ball up the right sideline, and found Craig in front of the net. Craig rattled off a high shot, but Amanda Chuttey whacked the ball out of the air.

The Herons rallied in the fourth quarter for the win. 24 seconds into the period, Wodka took the ball down the sideline from midfield, and found Schafer in front of the net. Schafer collected her second career goal, and put the Herons up 2-1. At the end of the period, Pierce had the ball at the top of the arc and found Wodka near the right post. Wodka was able to slot the ball into the left corner for her second goal this season. Wodka now leads the Herons with eight points (2g, 4a).

DeVito made three saves for the win, and Chuttey stopped 14 shots.

William Smith will be back in action when they travel to Skidmore Saturday, Oct. 5, for a league game at 3 p.m.
