Moore’s late strike sends Herons past Bombers

GENEVA, N.Y.- Senior Elizabeth Moore's goal in the 85th minute lifted the fourth-ranked William Smith College soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Ithaca on Cozzens Field this evening. The Herons, who have won their last three games, are now 7-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Liberty League play.

Off a corner kick, Moore collected a loose ball inside of the penalty area and slid a shot past the diving goalie for her first goal of the season. Senior Genevieve Carpenter was credited with an assist on the goal after she served the corner kick into the box over a pair of Ithaca defenders.

William Smith jumped on the Bombers right from the opening whistle. Junior Mariah Deschino had the game's first scoring opportunity 38 seconds into the game. Her shot from 15-yards out was punched aside by a diving Sara Jakobsze. In the 28th minute, senior Emilie Sauvayre had a chance on a free kick from 20 yards out that was smothered by Jakobsze.

Ithaca (6-3-1, 1-1-0) had their best opportunity of the first half in the 38th minute. Ally Christman carried the ball into the box. She fired a shot towards the lower right corner of the cage that was turned aside by Amanda Kesler.

In the 58th minute, Carpenter had a chance to put William Smith out front, but her shot from 18-yards out was scooped up by the Ithaca goalie.

The Bombers best chance of the second half came in the 66th minute. Mckensie Galusha redirected a shot on net but Kesler pounced on the loose ball.

William Smith dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Ithaca 16-6. The Bombers entered the game averaging 20.9 shots per game. The Herons also earned an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Amanda Kesler played 90 minutes in goal and made three saves as she notched her sixth shutout of the season. Sara Jakobsze made eight saves for the Bombers.

The Herons will wrap up its three-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they welcome Clarkson to Geneva. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
