SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Hobart College quarterbacks were picked off three times leading to 16 points for Union College as the Dutchmen handed the Statesmen their first loss of the season, 23-7.
Hobart (4-1, 0-1 Liberty League) limited Union to a season-low 98 passing yards, but the Dutchmen gained 229 yards on the ground, including 182 yards by sophomore running back Ike Irabor. The Statesmen managed just 33 yards rushing on the day and saw its 247 yards passing undermined by the three picks.
The first quarter was all Union. Hobart had the ball to start the game and went three-and-out. The Dutchmen responded with a 13-play, 82-yard scoring drive that ended with a 4-yard TD run by Irabor. On the Statesmen's ensuing possession, Union senior linebacker Evan Gilland jumped in front of a pass by senior quarterback
Ryan Hofmann and returned the interception 54 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Union turned the ball over on downs after throwing an incompletion on fourth-and-7 from the Hobart 20. The Statesmen offense again struggled to move the ball, and punted. Junior return man Justin Faia tried to make an over the shoulder catch on senior
John DelliSanti's 37-yard punt and mishandled it. Sophomore
Dante Kimbrough jumped on the loose ball at the Union 30. Five plays later, first-year
Rayshawn Boswell scored on a 3-yard run. Junior
Kyle Hackett's extra point made it a 14-7 game.
After the Hobart defense got a stop, the offense had a chance to tie the game. Sophomore quarterback
David Krewson, who came on in relief of Hofmann in the first quarter, completed a 53-yard pass to DelliSanti to move into Union territory. Two plays later, he went to the air again and this time Gilland intercepted the pass at the Union 6 and ran it back to the Union 45.
The Dutchmen executed an efficient two-minute drill, going 45 yards in four plays with Irabor going the final 30 yards on the ground to the end zone. Union missed the extra point and led 20-7 with 62 seconds left until halftime. Hobart was able to move the ball enough to attempt a 44-yard field goal, but Hackett missed what would have been a career long, wide right. The Dutchmen carried a 13-point lead into halftime.
The first five possessions of the third quarter ended in punts. Senior safety Joe Vanderhoof stopped the trend, intercepting Krewson near midfield. Union was able to turn that into three points when Marcos Rodriguez booted a 34-yard field goal with about nine and a half minutes remaining in the game.
Hobart had one final quality scoring chance with under five minutes remaining. Hofmann, who returned to the game in the fourth quarter, hit senior wide receiver
Ray Conley for 56 yards and a first and goal from the 7, but four straight incompletions essential sealed the Statesmen's fate.
The linebacker trio of sophomore
Bryan Aguilar,
David McCarthy and
Emmett Forde led the Hobart defense. Aguilar produced a game and career-high 13 tackles. McCarthy had 11 stops, including 1.5 for loss, and Forde posted 10 tackles, including a game-high 2.5 for loss.
Krewson was 13-of-26 passing for 159 yards. Hofmann was 5-of-17 for 88 yards. Conley caught three passes for a game-high 75 yards. Junior
Mike Giacobbe shared game-high honors with five receptions for 53 yards. Boswell gained 20 yards on five carries to lead Hobart on the ground. In addition to DelliSanti's 53-yard reception, he averaged 41.3 yards per punt and landed three of his six punts inside the Union 20.
Hobart had only allowed one sack through the first four weeks of the season, but gave up four to the Dutchmen. In addition to his two picks, Gilland made a team-high six solo tackles. V DiCaterino also had six tackles, including a sack.
Bellamy was 10-of-17 passing for 98 yards. Griffin Beal was his top target with five receptions for 61 yards.
Hobart will return to Boswell Field on Saturday, Oct. 12, to host Rensselaer (4-1, 1-0). Kickoff is at noon.
