DeVaney nets 16 in Heron debut

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year Lauren DeVaney shared game-high honors with 16 points in her collegiate debut tonight. SUNY Geneseo junior Natalie Alfieri also recorded 16 points, leading the visiting Knights to a 68-54 victory in Bristol Gym.

DeVaney played 25 minutes off the bench for William Smith, making 4-of-11 from the floor and all eight of her free throw attempts. It's the most points by a Heron first-year in her first game in over a decade. Sophomore Olivia Parisi added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Classmate Stella Davis chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and a game-high four steals.

Geneseo (2-0) had three starters in double figures. In addition to Alfieri, junior Lindsay Halpin scored 14 points and first-year Lauren Romito logged a double-double on 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while blocking a game-high five shots. Senior Sara Ciotti added eight points and a game-high six assists.

The Knights came out firing on all cylinders, knocking down 53.1 percent of their shots from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, building a 43-24 halftime lead. Geneseo was locked in during the second quarter, shooting at a 62.5 percent clip.

William Smith outscored the Knights in the second half, 30-25. The Herons used a 12-3 run in the third quarter to trim Geneseo's lead from 22 down to 13, but could get no closer.

The Herons will be back in action on Nov. 16-17 when they compete in the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic hosted by Franklin & Marshall. William Smith will face Elizabethtown (1-0) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
