#3 Elmira blanks William Smith

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.- The third-ranked Elmira College women's hockey team defeated William Smith 7-0 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at the Murray Athletic Center this afternoon. The Herons fall to 5-1-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in the UCHC and the Soaring Eagles improve to 3-0-0 overall and in conference play.

Junior Olivia Williams made 19 saves in 42 minutes of action for the Herons. Sophomore Amanda Aalto stopped 10 shots in the third period.

Eliza Beaudin (1g, 2a), Kiana Melvin (1g, 2a) and Tristen Tolan (2g, 1a) each had a game-high three points for Elmira. Stephanie Martin stopped all 20 shots she faced as she earned the shutout.

The Soaring Eagles opened the scoring at the 2:36 mark of the first period. Devyn Gilman tapped home a cross-ice pass from Emma Crocker for her third goal of the season. Sydney Harris was also credited with an assist on the goal. Nineteen seconds later, Elmira doubled its lead on Holley Riva's fourth goal of the year. She wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle past Williams. Gilman and Melvin were credited with assists on the goal. Tolan added a power-play goal at the 9:05 mark of the first period to make it a three goal game. Beaudin and Melvin notched assists on the goal.

The Herons gained a little traction in the second period, outshooting Elmira 13-6, but they could not put the puck past Martin. With William Smith on the power play, junior Emily Martino had a golden scoring opportunity on a shot from the point, but Martin smothered the shot with a glove save.

Just under two minutes into the third period, Jess Adams put the game out of reach. She flicked home a shot for her second goal of the season. Five minutes later, Melvin scored a power-play goal off assists from Amanda Zenstein and Eliza Beaudin. Beaudin and Tolan wrapped up the scoring with their fifth and third goals of the season, respectively.

The Soaring Eagles finished the game with a 36-20 advantage in shots on goal. Elmira made the most of its power-play opportunities, going 3-for-5 with the extra skater. William Smith was 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 23, when it takes on Utica. Faceoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
