Junior
Sheila McQuillen opened the scoring in the eighth minute with her fifth goal of the season. She forced a turnover at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot off the right goal post. McQuillen followed her shot and tapped the rebound over the goal line. The Herons continued to apply the pressure in the offensive third of the field, but their shots were right at Alison Wagner. The Canandaigua native finished the game with a career-high 22 saves.
Utica's lone shot of the game came in the 23rd minute. Jenna Keeman fired a free kick on cage that was stopped by Kesler.
William Smith extended its lead to 2-0 on Gray's first goal of the game. Off a set piece, senior
Emilie Sauvayre served the ball into the box. Junior
Maialen Martinez headed the centering pass to Gray, who was standing on the left post and slipped the ball past Wagner for her fourth tally of the season.
The Herons continued to pepper the cage in the second half but kept the Pioneers within two. In the 86th minute, Gray extended William Smith's lead to 3-0 with her fifth goal of the season. She collected a pass from senior
Eileen Rath at the top of the 18-yard box, turned her defender, and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the cage.
The Herons had one last chance in the 90th minute, but first-year Julia Dimenna's shot just missed the left post.
