Game Recap: Hobart Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

#5 Hobart, Elmira skate to 1-1 tie

GENEVA, N.Y.-The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team and Elmira skated to a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this evening. The Statesmen are now 1-0-1 this season and the Soaring Eagles are 0-1-1.

Neither team found the back of the net in an evenly played first period. Both teams fired nine shots on goal but were unable to convert on their scoring chances. Immediately following the opening faceoff, junior Mark Benemerito had the first scoring opportunity of the game. He broke into the offensive zone, deked around a defender and backhanded a shot on goal that was turned aside by Logan Bateman. Elmira's best chance of the period came just past the 13 minute mark. Connor Powell wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle off the crossbar.

In the first 60 seconds of the second period, Matthew Cuce had a flurry of chances, but could not find the back of the net. He had two shots blocked and one turned aside by Joe Halstrom's blocker. The Statesmen appeared to tilt the ice in their favor in the middle portion of the period, but they could not solve Bateman, who made several point blank stops. Senior Zach Sternbach nearly opened the scoring, but his shot from the right faceoff circle slot was kicked aside at the last second. Hobart's momentum was halted by a slashing penalty with five minutes remaining in the period. Elmira took a 1-0 lead on the ensuing power play. Nick Ford blasted a shot through traffic and under the crossbar for his second goal of the season. Christian Lloyd and Connor Powell were credited with assists on the goal. PA Martineau had a chance to tie the game late in the second period but his shot was stopped by Bateman.

Just over seven minutes into the third period, junior Alec Robitaille pocketed the equalizer. He intercepted a pass along his own blue line, raced the length of the rink and slid a shot under Bateman's right leg and into the back of the net. The short-handed goal was his first of the season. The Statesmen outshot Elmira 18-7 in the third period.

Each team had three shots on goal in the overtime period. Powell had the best chance for the Soaring Eagles, but his shot was turned aside by Hallstrom. Sophomroe Zach Tyson had Hobart's best chance of the extra session, but his shot was kicked aside by Bateman.

Hobart finished the game with a 48-29 advantage in shots on goal. Elmira was 1-for-6 on the power play while Hobart was 0-for-4 with the extra attacker.

Halstrom made 28 saves in 65 minutes of action in goal for Hobart. Logan Bateman made 47 stops in goal for Elmira.

The Statesmen will be back in action next weekend, Nov. 8-9, when it opens NEHC play. Hobart will host Johnson & Wales on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. and Suffolk on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m.
