GRANTHAM PA.—The William Smith College field hockey team fell 6-1 to No. 11 Messiah this afternoon. Junior
Sophie Craig scored a goal for the Herons. Four players scored for the Falcons.
The Falcons (14-4) recorded a goal from Ashlyn Smith. and two goals from Taylor Wiederrecht at the end of the first half. Messiah's defense did not let the Herons get a shot off the entire half.
The Falcons started the second half off with four penalty corners and four shots. Josie Weaver found the back of the cage and increased Messiah's lead to 4-0. After a penalty corner eight minutes into the half, the Herons were able to get past the Falcon's defense. Sophomore
Elizabeth Jacobia inserted a penalty corner, and senior
Kelsey Pierce was able to fire off a shot, and record William Smith's first scoring opportunity of the game. A few minutes later, Jacobia inserted another penalty corner, but this time first-year
Kate Barilla found herself with the ball. She rattled off a shot, but Megan Bomba made the save.
The Falcons scored less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Herons quickly countered, scoring less than a minute later. Jacobia inserted a penalty corner to Craig, and Craig fired a shot past Bomba, scoring her fifth goal of the season. A few minutes later, Abby Boyer notched her second goal of the game.
Messiah had a 32-3 advantage in shots, and a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners. Junior
Alexandra DeVito split time with sophomore
Stephanie Stone. DeVito made 3 saves in 30 minutes, and Stone stopped the ball four times in 30 minutes. Bomba made two saves for the win.
William Smith finished the season with a 5-11 record. First-year
Mackenzie Wodka finished the season with a team high 14 points on five goals and four assists. Senior
Bennett Tierney led the team with 4 defensive saves. DeVito saw action in 15 games, and ended the season with a .735 save percentage.
