Golden Flyers clip Herons 2-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Nazareth 2-1 in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at Bill Gray's Iceplex this afternoon. The Golden Flyers scored twice in the second period to rally past the Herons.

Junior Lexi Nottke scored for William Smith (6-2-0, 3-2-0). Junior Olivia Williams made a career-high 53 saves, including 23 in the third period.

Six different players recorded a point for Nazareth (8-1-0, 4-1-0). Makenna Wiljanen and Hailey Redders scored the goals for the Golden Flyers. Adrianna Brehm started in goal and made 24 saves in 60 minutes of action.

Nottke opened the scoring at the 14:15 mark of the first period. Fresh out of the penalty box, she poked a puck away from a Nazareth player in the neutral zone and played give-and-go with senior Kate Klimaszewski. Nottke wristed a shot from the slot past Brehm for her first goal of the season. The Herons were able to hold onto the lead into the first intermission despite being outshot 14-9 in the opening period.

Nazareth tied the game just over three minutes into the second period. Acting as a screen, Wiljanen tipped a shot from the point past Williams for her seventh goal of the season. Madison Nichols and Stephanie Kubis were credited with assists on the goal. Seven minutes later, Redders snapped a shot from the slot past Williams for her eighth goal of the season. Abbey  Luth and Celena Rea were credited with assists on the game-winning goal.

Neither team found the back of the net in the third period. Nazareth used an extended 5-on-3 power play to pile up a 23-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Williams up to the task, making 23 saves.

The Golden Flyers finished the game with a 55-25 advantage in shots on goal. Neither team converted on its power play chances. William Smith was 0-for-5 and Nazareth was 0-for-6 with the extra attacker.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they travel to take on Buffalo State. Faceoff in Buffalo, N.Y., is scheduled for 7 p.m.
