Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Herons advance to Liberty League Championship match

GENEVA, N.Y.-The second-ranked William Smith College soccer team scored twice in the first half on its way to a 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With their 11th straight victory, the Herons improve to 15-1-1 overall this season and advance to the championship match of the Liberty League tournament.

St. Lawrence (12-5-0) had the game's first scoring opportunities, but Julia Mulhern fired one shot just outside of the left post. Six minutes later, she then had a shot blocked by a William Smith defender.

William Smith opened the scoring in the 20th minute on junior Julia Keogh's fourth goal of the season. Her strike to the lower right corner of the cage was set up by a fantastic bit of passing from juniors Sheila McQuillen and Amanda Adams. Adams forced a turnover right outside the box, slid a pass to McQuillen, who one-touched it forward to Keogh in the 18-yard box. Keogh beat her defender and fired the ball past Allen into the back of the net. Just over nine minutes later, junior Mariah Deschino notched her fourth goal of the season. She picked up a loose ball 10-yards out and chipped it over the keeper. Junior Amanda Adams nearly gave William Smith a three-goal lead, but her shot from 19-yards out just missed the crossbar.

In the 75th minute, Mulhern had the Saints best scoring chance of the second half. Her shot from the top of the box just missed the left goal post. McQuillen nearly scored for William Smith in the 81st minute, but Cynnie White smothered her shot from 16-yards out.

The Herons finished the game with a 16-4 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Amanda Kesler made one save in 90 minutes in goal for William Smith.  Samantha Allen started and made one save in 53 minutes of action. Cynnie White made one save in 37 minutes in goal for the Saints.

The Herons will play for the league championship and its accompanying automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m. William Smith will face the winner of the second semifinal, Vassar vs RIT.
