Huskies edge #3 Statesmen in OT

GORHAM, Maine—The third-ranked Hobart College hockey team was edged by the University of Southern Maine 3-2 in overtime this evening at the USM Ice Arena. The Statesmen fall to 6-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in NEHC play, while the Huskies improve to 3-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play.

Adam Withers scored his second goal of the game at 3:32 of sudden-death overtime to win the game for Southern Maine. Withers was camped out at the left post when the rebound of a shot from Bobby Kinsey was blocked in front and settled onto his stick.  Withers stuffed the puck inside the post past sophomore goalie Joe Halstrom. Kinsey and Brendan Dowler earned the assists

Junior Andrew Longo and sophomore Aaron Maguyon each recorded a goal for the Statesmen. Senior Lawson MacDougall earned an assist.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Ethan Bassile converted a feed from Maverick Lynes for his second goal of the season. Tanner McClure picked up the second assist.

Hobart got even early in the second period when Longo stole the puck inside the Huskies' zone, wheeled to the middle and beat goalie Anthony D'Aloisio for an unassisted power-play goal at 1:53.  Less than six minute later, the Statesmen took a 2-1 lead as Maguyon converted a feed from MacDougall for his fourth goal of the season. Withers tied the game at 2-2 at 10:45 when he intercepted a pass in his own zone and went the length of the ice on a breakaway against Halstrom. Withers snapped off a laser to the top right corner from 20 feet out to even the score.

D'Aloisio stopped 32 shots, and Halstrom finished with 21 saves. Hobart piled up a 34-24 advantage in shots on goal, and went 1-for-4 on the power-play. Southern Maine was 0-for-5 with the extra skater.

The Statesmen will be back in action when they host Trinity College (Conn.) Wednesday, Dec. 11. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Cooler.
