LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with a 22-12 win at Siena College this afternoon. The Statesmen broke team, conference and national records against the Saints.
Senior faceoff specialist
Matthew Pedicine ruled the faceoff X, winning 32-of-37. He broke the NCAA Division I record for faceoff wins. The previous mark was 30, shared by Syracuse's Bill Dirrigl (vs. Cortland, March 16, 1988), UMass' Sam Joseph (vs. Harvard, April 20, 1994) and Army West Point's Tony Vozzolo (vs. Lehigh, April 1, 2003). Pedicine also eclipsed Hobart's Division I era record for ground balls, collecting a 20. He shared the previous mark of 16 with Tim Booth '03 and Bobby Dattilo '12.
First-year attackman
Jason Knox also enjoyed a record-setting day. Just one week after junior
Eric Holden broke Hobart's DI era record for goals in a game with seven, Knox raised the bar to nine. He was on fire in the first half, scoring eight of the Statesmen's 15 goals in the opening 30 minutes, including four in a row in a four-minute span in the second quarter. With his final goal, Knox also broke the Northeast Conference record for goals in a game. The previous mark was eight, set by Robert Morris' Luke Laszkiewicz vs. Canisius in 2016.
In addition to Pedicine and Knox's big days, the Statesmen got five-points on a goal and four assists from senior
Chris Aslanian, raising his career totals to 79 goals and 66 assists for 145 points. He passed Nate Hill '05 (145) to take over third place on Hobart's Division I career points list. Aslanian also passed Jamie Kirk '08 to take over fourth place on Hobart's DI career assists list.
Sophomore
Tommy Mott also had five points, scoring a career-high three goals and matching his career-high with two assists.
For his part, Holden went from goal scorer to play-maker, sharing game-high honors with Aslanian with four assists. Senior
Koko Avedisian (1g,2a) and first-year
Derrek Madonna (2g,1a) each produced three points.
In goal, junior
Sam Lucchesi made 10 saves in 28 minutes of work, spanning the third and fourth quarter.
Siena scored the game's opening goal, but Hobart responded with seven straight goals for a 7-1 lead after 15 minutes. Mott completed his hat trick with three seconds left in the opening frame.
The Saints (0-1) scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter, but the Statesmen countered with three in a row and seven of the next eight. The 7-1 run was highlighted by Knox's four straight goals.
Hobart led 15-6 at halftime and 19-10 at the end of three quarters.
The Statesmen outshot Siena 51-34, held the upper hand in ground balls 51-20 and finished with a 33-5 advantage in faceoffs. Both teams were 2-for-3 with the extra-man.
Hobart will return home to face No. 6 Cornell. The 138th meeting between the New York rivals is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22.
Correction (2/18/2019): This story was corrected. It originally stated that the 22 goals tied the most scored in Hobart's Division I era. Three games in the late '90s exceeded that total.
