Mia Morrison moved into second place on the William Smith College career points list, but Union College handed the Herons a 67-61 defeat to end the Liberty League women's basketball regular season.
Morrison scored nine points in the game to raise her career total to 1,526, passing Gwen Scott '82 (1,522) for second place. Only current Heron Assistant Coach
Jennifer Goodell Cooper '97 (2,042) has more career points. Morrison also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and blocked a team-high four shots.
Sophomore
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou led William Smith in scoring with 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Senior
Olivia Hughes chipped in nine points.
The Herons (16-8, 12-6) limited Union to just three points in the first seven minutes of the contest, but then the Dutchwomen scored 10 straight points. Amber Raisner had five points during the charge. Union led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Dutchwomen (16-8, 11-7) extended their lead to 12 by halftime and 17 going into the fourth quarter. Nicole Conley and Raisner led the Union offense with 19 points and 18 points, respectively. Sophie Borg finished with 14 points. Borg was Union's top rebounder with 12, while Conley added 11.
The Herons rallied in the fourth quarter, using a 17-4 run to narrow their deficit to just four with a minute and a half remaining. Five different players contributed to the surge, including four points each from Dimitrakopoulou and junior
Emma Gallagher. Union was able to hold on for the win by making 11-of-12 at the free throw line down the stretch.
After struggling to find their shooting touch in the first three quarters, William Smith shot 45 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter, finishing the game at 30 percent. Union shot well through three quarters (.405), but struggled in the final 10 minutes (.077, 1-13). Both teams made five 3-pointers. The big difference was at the line, where Union made 26, while William Smith attempted just 18 (making 14).
The teams will meet again in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 19. As the No. 4 seed in the six-team tournament, William Smith will host fifth seeded Union. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
