Herons, Golden Flyers skate to 2-2 tie

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Nazareth at Bill Gray's Iceplex in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest this afternoon. The Herons are now 16-6-2 overall this season and 12-3-2 in conference play.

Junior Gina Scibetta (1g, 1a) and sophomore Emily Martino (2a) led the way for William Smith, finishing with a game-high two points each. Sophomore Olivia Williams started in goal and made 28 saves for the Herons. Emily Kromer led Nazareth (18-4-2, 12-4-1) with a pair of assists. Adrianna Brehm made 33 saves in goal for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth opened the scoring at the 13:48 mark of the first period. Cristina Darby poked a loose puck past Williams for her seventh goal of the season. Shanley Austin and Kromer were credited with assists on the goal. Austin's initial shot was stopped by Williams but Darby was standing on the back post to tuck the puck over the goal line.

The Herons controlled the tempo in the opening period, outshooting Nazareth 14-6 in the first 20 minutes.

William Smith drew level with Nazareth a mere 70 seconds into the second period. Sophomore Julia Mings collected a pass from Scibetta and one-timed the shot into the back of the net. It was Mings' 15th goal of the season. Emily Martino was credited with the secondary assist on the goal. The Herons jumped in front seven minutes later when Scibetta snapped a shot past Brehm from the left faceoff circle for her 20th goal of the season. Martino picked up her second assist of the game on the goal. Scibetta is the first Heron to record 20 goals in a season. With the goal and assist in today's game, Scibetta now has 36 points on the season, surpassing Krista Federow's single season record of 34 set during the 2017-18 season.

The Golden Flyers turned up the pressure in the final period, outshooting William Smith 15-7. Nazareth tied the game at the 13:56 mark of the season when Mikaila Rubin fired home her 11th goal of the season. The power-play goal was assisted by Kromer and Delaney Carle.

William Smith finished the game with a 35-30 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 0-for-3 on the power play and the Golden Flyers were 1-for-5 with the extra attacker.

William Smith and Nazareth will conclude their regular seasons tomorrow at The Cooler. William Smith will finish third in the conference standings if Nazareth wins tomorrow's contest.
