POTSDAM, N.Y.—William Smith College extended its winning streak to three games with a gritty 70-65 overtime victory at Clarkson University in Liberty League women's basketball action today. The Herons scored the final eight points of the game to improve to 13-7 overall, 9-5 in the conference.
 
William Smith overcame a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes of regulation. The Golden Knights' Molly Stewart made a 3-pointer that gave the home team a 60-53 lead, but it proved to be the team's final field goal in regulation. Senior 
Mia Morrison made back-to-back layups to start the rally. Junior 
Emma Gallagher made 1-of-2 free throws with 22 seconds left to make it a two-point game. Five seconds later, Morrison came up with a steal. Out of a timeout, senior 
Olivia Hughes made a layup to tie the game. Clarkson fired off a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it didn't fall.
 
In overtime, Hannah Earl's jumper game CU a 65-62 lead with under three minutes left. It was the Golden Knight's final bucket of the game. Gallagher sank a 3-pointer near the two minute mark to tie the game. After a minute-and-a-half of scoreless play, sophomore 
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou drained a 3-pointer to give the Herons the lead. Clarkson missed a three at the other end of the floor and was forced to foul. Sophomore 
Juliana Gamboa closed out the win by making both of the free throws with seven seconds left.
 
William Smith held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and carried a 33-32 lead into halftime. The Knights outscored the Herons 16-12 in the third quarter to take a 48-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Morrison posted her ninth double-double of the season on 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She was 9-of-17 shooting from the floor. Hughes and Dimitrakopoulou each contributed 10 points. The Herons shot well, making 47 percent from the floor. They struggled a bit at the line, making just 59 percent of their freebies, but overcame that with volume. William Smith made 10 more free throws than Clarkson attempted (16-6). The Herons, who entered the weekend ninth in the nation in rebounding, dominated the glass. They enjoyed a 47-32 rebounding advantage.
 
Four of the Golden Knights' five starters reached double digits in the scoring column, but CU didn't get any points from its bench. Stewart led all scorers with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. She also had a game-high four steals. Earl scored 15 points. Kati Gotch added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Rachel Marion chipped in 10 points.
 
Clarkson shot just 34 percent from the floor, but stayed in the game with 11 3-pointers.
 
William Smith will return to Bristol Gym on Friday, Feb. 8, when the Herons host Skidmore (7-14, 6-8). Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
