ITHACA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior
Mia Morrison scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, but top-seeded Ithaca College powered past the Herons 77-56 to advance to the championship game of the Liberty League Tournament. The Herons end the season with a 17-9 record, while the Bombers improved to 21-5.
Morrison was 7-of-16 from the floor with a 3-pointer and was 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Sophomore
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou added 15 points, six rebounds and a team-high three assists. First-year
Olivia Parisi chipped in eight points and six boards. William Smith finished with a 38-36 edge on the glass, but committed 24 turnovers to 16 for Ithaca.
Ithaca's Cassidy O'Malley shot 10-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the line for a game-high 28 points. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. O'Malley was joined in double digits by Grace Cannon and Allie Tunick, who scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
In the first quarter, Ithaca led by five, 14-9, with under three minutes to go. Morrison and junior
Emma Gallagher made the final two baskets of the opening 10 minutes to trim the Bomber lead to one.
Morrison made it a 6-0 run and gave the Herons a 15-14 lead with the first bucket of the second quarter, but Ithaca responded with a 10-1 run for an eight-point lead about three minutes before the half. The Bombers maintained that margin, going into the break with a 30-22 lead.
Ithaca caught fire in the second half, shooting 60 percent from the floor, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Bombers made their first three shots, including 3s by Annie Giannone and Tunick, stretching the home team's lead to 16. William Smith countered with seven straight points, kicked off by Morrison's 3-pointer, to get within nine.
IC hit back with a 13-3 run that pushed its lead back into double digits for good.
Morrison and fellow senior
Olivia Hughes led the Herons to a 59-43 record (.578) over the past four seasons, the most wins and highest winning percentage since the Class of 2014. Morrison finished second on William Smith's career points list (1,584) and career blocked shots (89) and fifth in career rebounds (845). Hughes, who played in her 100th career game today, finished fourth in career blocked shots with 71.
Morrison scored 489 points and grabbed 251 rebounds this season, tied for sixth and tied for fifth, respectively, on the Herons' single season lists. Hughes led the team with 30 blocked shots this year, tied for seventh on the single season list.
