Herons face Golden Flyers in UCHC semifinal

For the second straight year, the William Smith College ice hockey team will travel to Pine Valley, N.Y., for a United Collegiate Hockey Conference semifinal contest. On Saturday, March 3, the Herons will take on Nazareth at Elmira's Murray Athletic Center at 7 p.m.

William Smith brings a 17-7-2 overall record into the semifinals. The third-seeded Herons advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0 win over sixth-seeded Neumann last Saturday. The Golden Flyers were 13-4-1 in conference play and finished second, earning a first round bye. Top-seeded Elmira was 18-0-0 in the UCHC and will serve as hosts for the weekend. The Soaring Eagles will take on Manhattanville in the other semifinal. Faceoff in the first semifinal is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Tickets will be on sale at the Murray Athletic Center-Center Dome Lobby beginning at 2 p.m. each day of competition. Tickets will cost $5 for adults, $3 for students with College ID, and children 12 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets purchased on Saturday will be good for both semifinal games.

The Herons have put together a record breaking campaign in 2018-19. William Smith's 17 wins are a one-win improvement over last season. The Heron offense has erupted for 112 goals, 183 assists, and 295 points. William Smith's goalies have posted seven shutouts this season one more than single-season record set last year.

Individually, the Herons are led by a trio of 30-point scorers. Junior forward Gina Scibetta leads the team and is second in the conference with 22 goals, and 39 points. She is third on the team with 17 assists. Scibetta broke Krista Federow's single season records for goals and points. Sophomore Jules Kennedy has 17 goals and 19 assists for 36 points. UCHC Rookie of the Year Abbey Luth is third with 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points. Senior captain Stephanie Hampton has a team best 20 assists and needs one point to reach 30 for the season. Sophomore Olivia Williams has played a majority of the minutes in goal for William Smith. She is 13-7-2 overall with a 1.98 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. She recorded a program best five shutouts this season.

Nazareth brings a 19-4-2 overall record into the semifinals. The Golden Flyers are led by Hailey Redders' 15 goals, 22 assists and 37 points. She is 16-3-2 overall with a .942 save percentage and a 1.31 GAA.

Saturday's game will be the third meeting between the two teams. The Golden Flyers and Herons played each other to wrap up the regular season. Nazareth emerged with a 1-0-1 edge in the all-time series and clinched the No. 2 seed with a 3-1 win over William Smith on Feb. 17.

Fans unable to make it to the game can follow the action online with Live Stats and Video through Elmira's video portal. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 FM in Geneva).
