Lucas, Dougherty combined for 43 against Skidmore

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College seniors Jamal Lucas and Colin Dougherty combined for 43 points, but Skidmore College put five players in double figures to earn a 79-71 Liberty League win in Bristol Gym tonight. Lucas recorded a game-high 23 points and Dougherty finished with 20 points.
 
The Statesmen's dynamic duo combined to shoot 17-of-29 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Dougherty raised his career point total to 1,605 points, passing Andrew D'Eloia '95 for seventh place all-time at Hobart. Lucas was credited with a game-high five assists. Junior Tucker Lescoe was 3-of-4 from 3-point range and finished with 11 points.
 
Skidmore senior Chase Ta scored a team-high 19 points and sophomore Noah Meren added 18 points. Senior Edvinus Rupkus scored the Thoroughbreds' first eight points of the game, including the 2,000th of his career, and finished with 16 points. First-year Greg Skoric chipped in 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, helping Skidmore to a 40-31 rebounding advantage. Jack Byrne also had 10 points.
 
The game turned on three minute stretch of the second half when Skidmore (14-7, 12-3) went on a 13-3 run. Five different players scored for the visitors during the push that saw them turn a 46-41 deficit into a 54-49 lead. The lead yo-yoed between one and two possessions over the next couple of minutes, but the Thoroughbreds solidified their grip on the lead with an 8-2 capped by a Chase Ta 3-pointer with about four minutes to go.
 
Hobart (13-9, 10-5) got back within four on a layup by Lucas with 22 seconds to go, but Skidmore closed out the win by making four free throws in the waning seconds of the game.
 
The Statesmen never led in the first half and trailed by as many as 10 before heading into halftime on an 8-2 run bookended by 3-pointers from first-year Matt Kitzman and Lucas. Skidmore led 34-30 at the half with Lucas leading all scorers with 13 points.
 
Hobart used a 16-7 run out of the break to take its largest lead of the game, 46-41. All five Statesmen starters contributed to the surge.
 
Hobart shot 47 percent from the floor with 10 3-pointers. Skidmore shot 47 percent with nine 3-pointers.
 
The Statesmen will play their final regular season home game on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they welcome Bard (12-10, 8-7) to Bristol Gym. The contest is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Prior to tipoff, Hobart will honor its three seniors Dougherty, Lucas and Sean McKinless.
