Statesmen, Lakers set for quarterfinal clash

The No. 7/8 Hobart College hockey team will travel to Oswego, N.Y., on Saturday, March 16 to take on No. 5/7 Oswego State in an NCAA quarterfinal matchup. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Marano Campus Center Arena.

The Statesmen, 20-7-2, reached the quarterfinals after defeating Plymouth State 2-1 on Saturday, March 9. Sophomore Alec Robatille and junior Julien Denicourt each had a goal and an assist in the win. The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 5:48 mark of the first period when Ryan Stevens scored his 12th goal of the season. Hobart flipped momentum in the second period, outshooting Plymouth State 16-5. Junior Julien Denicourt tied the game at one with his sixth goal of the season. Robatille pocketed the game-winning goal, his first of the season, at the 8:22 mark of the third period. First-year Liam Lascelle made 13 saves as he earned the win.
 
Hobart enters the weekend ranked sixth in the nation in scoring margin (+1.90 gpg), ninth in scoring offense 93.97 gpg), 14th in scoring defense (2.07 gpg) and 23rd on the penalty kill (85.2%). Individually, the Statesmen are led by senior Jonas Toupal and first-year Zach Tyson who each have 26 points. Toupal has 12 goals and 14 assists and Tyson has six goals and a team best 20 assists. Sophomore Travis Schneider has collected a team leading 14 goals this season.
 
A New England Hockey Conference All-Rookie team selection, Lascelle has compiled a strong season in goal for the Statesmen. He is 9-2-2 overall with a 1.62 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. He ranks sixth in the nation in GAA and eighth in save percentage. Lascelle has recorded four shutouts this season which are fifth most in Division III and are tied for Hobart's single season record. Junior Alexander Connal is 8-5-0 with a 2.30 GAA and a .907 save percentage. He has two shutouts.
 
Oswego State brings a 19-6-2 overall record into Saturday's quarterfinal contest. The Lakers are making their eighth NCAA appearance in the last 10 years. Oswego earned an at-large bid and a first-round bye after falling to No. 2 Geneseo in the SUNYAC championship game. Oswego is ranked fifth in the nation on the power play (26.7%), seventh in scoring margin (+1.89 gpg), eighth in winning percentage (.741), ninth in scoring defense (2.00 gpg) and 11th in scoring offense (3.89 gpg). First team All-SUNYAC selection Anthony Passero leads the Lakers with 21 assists and 30 points. Joseph Molinaro as a team best 14 goals. Oswego has six players who have recorded 20 plus points this season. David Richer has played a majority of the minutes in goal. He is 12-5-2 with a 2.17 GAA and a .906 save percentage and three shutouts.
 
Saturday's quarterfinal matchup will mark the second time Hobart has faced Oswego this season. On Nov. 10, 2018, the Lakers defeated Hobart 4-2 at the Marano Campus Center. Senior Tanner Shaw led the way for the Statesmen with two assists. Dennicort and first-year Blake Coffey scored for the Statesmen. Connal made 19 saves in 58 minutes of action.
