Statesmen take down Wagner 13-7 in NEC opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior Chris Aslanian logged a goal and an assist in a 13-7 win over Wagner College in the Statesmen's Northeast Conference opener today on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium. Aslanian now holds the Hobart Division I career points record upping his total to 164.

The Statesmen improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in NEC play, while the Seahawks fall to 1-7 this season and 0-1 in the conference. First-year Jason Knox posted a game-high four goals. Sophomore Tommy Mott dished out a career-high four assists. Junior Eric Holden scored three and junior Justin Scott chipped in three points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore Ryan Archer produced a goal and an assist.

Senior Matthew Pedicine went 14-for-23 at the faceoff X and grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls. Junior Sam Mueller caused two turnovers. Junior Sam Lucchesi played all 60 minutes in goal for the Statesmen and made seven saves.

Dominic Branda and Tim Schmit each chipped in two goals for Wagner. Nick Warren had a goal and scooped up a team-high four ground balls. Matt Sefcik played 58:43 in goal for the Seahawks and made 16 saves.

Knox scored the first quarter's only goal with 3:07 remaining. His 17th goal of the season came off a feed from Mott. The Statesmen notched the first two goals of the second quarter to go up 3-0. Holden and Scott logged unassisted tallies, before Nick Warren put the Seahawks on the board with 9:42 left in the first half. With 5:44 on the clock, senior Stanny Gilbertson notched his sixth goal of the year. Schmidt answered for Wagner to make it 4-2 with 4:28 before the break. Knox posted his second goal of the afternoon off a pass from Aslanian. The assist gave Aslanian the Hobart Division I career points record. Nic Ancona found the back of the net for Wagner with 1:15 left in the first half to make it 5-3 at halftime.

The Statesmen dominated the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to build a 10-3 lead. Holden and first-year Bradley Simas opened the run with unassisted tallies. It was Simas' second goal this year. Knox earned the hat trick off a feed from Mott. Then Holden struck again off a pass from Archer, and Knox closed out the run with his fourth of the game and 20th of the season off a pass from Scott.

Branda notched back-to-back goals for Wagner to open the fourth quarter. However the teams trade goals for the remainder. Mott found Scott who made it 11-5 with 11:58 remaining. Schmidt scored his second of the afternoon for the Seahawks with 9:45 on the clock. Archer tallied his 13th goal this season with 6:34 left. Stephen Dwyer made it 12-7 for Wagner with 3:00 left, and Aslanian closed out the scoring with his 11th goal this season with 2:31 to go. Mott set up the final goal.

The Statesmen finished with a 50-32 advantage in shots and a 31-16 lead in ground balls. Hobart was successful on 17-of-20 clear attempts, while Wagner went 18-for-21 on clears.
The Statesmen are back in action on Tuesday, March 19, when they travel to take on Colgate in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
