#7/8 Statesmen headed to national semifinals

The No. 7/8 Hobart College ice hockey team will face No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the NCAA Division III national semifinals on Friday, March 22, in Stevens Point, Wis., at 8 p.m. EST.
The Statesmen bring a 21-7-2 overall record into the contest, matching the program record for wins in a season. The Pointers are 27-0-2 this year.

Hobart is making its ninth overall and fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. It's the third time in program history that the Statesmen have advanced to the national semifinals, and the first time since 2009.

Senior Jonas Toupal and first-year Zach Tyson lead Hobart with 26 points each. Toupal has posted 12 goals and 14 assists, while Tyson has logged six goals and a team-high 20 points. Sophomore Travis Schneider has registered a team-high 15 goals. First-year Liam Lascelle has played the most minutes in goal. He's sporting a 1.64 goals against average, a .935 save percentage and a 10-2-2 record. Lascelle ranks sixth in the nation in GAA, 12th in save percentage, sixth in win percentage (.786), and is tied for fifth in shutouts with four this year. He is tied for Hobart's single season shutout record. 

The Statesmen rank in the top 15 in the nation four statistical categories. Hobart is sixth in Division III in scoring margin (1.87), seventh in team win percentage (.733), eighth in scoring offense (3.93) and 14th in scoring defense (2.07).

UW-Stevens Point brings a 27-0-2 overall record into the national semifinals. Stevens Point earned the right to host this weekend's semifinals and national championship by virtue of being No. 1 in the ParWise rankings. The Pointers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the WIAC regular season and tournament championships. Stevens Point is ranked second in the nation in scoring defense (1.41 gpg), second in scoring margin (+2.79 gpg), sixth in the nation in scoring offense (4.21 gpg), 10th on the penalty kill (88.7%), and 24th on the power play (21.2%). Tanner Karty leads the Pointers with 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points. Four other players have recorded 20-plus points this season. Connor Ryckman has played a majority of the minutes in goal this season. He is 24-0-1 with a 1.37 GAA and a .936 save percentage.

Friday's winner will advance to play either No. 2 Geneseo or No. 3/4 Norwich in Saturday's national championship game at 8 EST.
