Game Recap: Hobart Lacrosse | | Ken DeBolt

Statesmen top Mount, move into 1st in NEC

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College lacrosse team earned an 11-8 Northeast Conference win over Mount St. Mary's University on Boswell Field at Urick Stadium to move into a tie for first place in the league standings. The Statesmen improved to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the NEC. The Mountaineers had their five-game winning streak snapped and slip to 8-6, 4-1.

On Senior Day, it was seniors Chris Aslanian and Matthew Pedicine that led the way for Hobart. Aslanian produced a game-high six points on five goals and an assist. Pedicine won 13-of-23 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls. He raised his career total to 290 ground balls, breaking Bobby Dattilo's career record (Division I era).

The Statesmen also got five-point games from junior Eric Holden (3g 2a) and sophomore Ryan Archer (5a). Holden and Aslanian both became 50-point scorers on the day. Holden leads the team with 53 points (37g 16a) with Aslanian one point behind (21g 31). Holden is third on Hobart's Division I season points list, three points away from Mark Williamson's 2004 record (35-21-56). It's the first time since the Statesmen joined Division I in 1995 that Hobart has had two 50-point scorers in the same season.

Junior goalie Sam Lucchesi earned his eighth win of the season with 12 saves.

For Mount St. Mary's, sophomore Luke Frankeny had a team-high three points on two goals and an assist. Classmate Sam Stephan had a team-high eight ground balls while sophomore Bryan McIntosh picked up four ground balls with a game-high four caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Dylan Furnback also recorded 12 saves.

Less than a minute in, the Mountaineers scored the game's opening goal for their only lead of the day. Holden set up Aslanian on back-to-back goals pushing Hobart into the lead for good. Holden made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal 32 seconds after Aslanian's second goal. In the final minute of the first quarter, Frankeny made it 3-2 with his first tally of the game.

The Statesmen carried a 6-3 lead into halftime with Archer setting up all three Hobart goals. First-year Jason Knox made it 4-2 with his 28th goal of the season, one off the Hobart Division I era record for goals by a first-year. The Mount answered about two minutes later, but Aslanian and Holden scored back-to-back less than a minute apart to complete the first half scoring.

Pedicine won the opening faceoff of the second half, scooping up his record-breaking 285th career ground ball.

Frankeny opened the third quarter scoring, but the Statesmen countered with three straight tallies. Aslanian buried a feed from Archer followed by consecutive goals by junior Justin Scott for a 9-4 advantage. The Mount rallied with three goals in a row of their own to make it a 9-7 game with 13:35 left in the fourth quarter, but the Statesmen scored two of the final three goals to hand the Mountaineers their first NEC loss of the season.

For the game, Hobart enjoyed a 51-41 advantage in shots and a 13-10 edge in faceoffs. Mount St. Mary's had the edge in ground balls 37-29 and committed four fewer turnovers (14-10).

Now tied with the Mountaineers for first in the NEC, the Statesmen can clinch at least a share of the regular season championship and the top seed in the NEC Tournament with a win in the regular season finale at Robert Morris (6-7, 3-2). The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.
