GENEVA, N.Y.-The 13th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team was defeated by No. 14 Bowdoin, 13-5, in a NCAA second round game on Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium this afternoon. The Herons conclude their 2019 campaign with a 17-3 overall record. The 17 wins this season are second most in program history.

The Polar Bears (10-7) advance to third round of the NCAA tournament where they will meet No. 3 Middlebury next weekend.

Payton McMahon led the way for the Herons with three points on two goals and an assist. Junior

Bowdoin was led by Fiona Bundy's six points. She had five goals and an assist. Katie Miller dominated the stat sheet for the Polar Bears, finishing with four goals, five points, six draws and two ground balls. Sophia Schaefer won five draws. Erin Morrissey started in goal she made six saves in 45 minutes of action. Aliyah Biondo played the final 15 minutes, stopping one shot.

Bowdoin opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game. Bundy beat Hofmann on a free position shot from directly in front of the cage. The Herons tied the game with 23:23 left in the first half. Murphy collected a pass from McMahon and fired a shot into the back of the net. Five minutes later, William Smith took its only lead of the game. Williams ran down the left side and bounced her 22nd goal of the season past Morrissey.

The Polar Bears answered with a five-goal run to take the lead for good. Miller tied the game 2-2 with 15:29 remaining in the half. She deked around her defender and fired a shot into the back of the net. The woman-up goal was her 56th goal of the season. Just over a minute later, Schaefer one timed a pass from Miller past Hofmann. It was her second goal of the season. Finnerty gave Bowdoin a two goal lead 48 seconds later. Elizabeth Growney was credited with an assist on Finnerty's 19th goal of the season. Bundy scored the game's next two goals to complete her hat trick. Her 42nd goal of the season came on a free position shot with 9:10 remaining in regulation. Three minutes later, she notched her 43rd goal of the season, beating Hofmann with a bounce shot directly in front of the cage. Santora cut the deficit to three goals with her 32nd goal of the season with 5:33 remaining in regulation. Bowdoin led 6-3 at the half and held a 16-8 edge in shots.

The Polar Bears took command of the game, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Schaefer opened the scoring 28 seconds into the half, collecting a pass from Finnerty and dunking home the shot attempt. It was her third goal of the season. Twenty-four seconds later, Bundy fired home her fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot. It was her 44th tally of the season. Miller's second goal of the game extended the lead to 9-3. Her 57th goal of the season, was unassisted. Forty-five seconds later, McMahon snapped the three goal run with her first goal of the game. She bounced a shot into the back of the net from directly in front of the cage. Her 27th goal of the season was unassisted.

Bowdoin scored the game's next three goals to put the contest out of reach. Amanda Anderson fired home a feed from Bundy for her 16th goal of the season. Four minutes later, Miller completed her hat trick, firing home a free position shot. It was her 58th goal of the season. Thirty seconds later, Bundy notched her fifth goal of the game also on a free position shot. With 12:17 remaining in regulation, McMahon collected her 28th goal of the season. Miller closed out the scoring with 11:55 left in the game. Her 59th goal of the season was a free position goal.

Bowdoin dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 27-17 edge in shots and a 15-5 advantage in the draw circle. The Polar Bears were 14-of-18 clearing the ball and the Herons were 20-of-29. William Smith did win the ground ball battle, 19-16.

With five caused turnovers in today's game, Montgomery finished the 2019 season with 46 caused turnovers, second on William Smith's single-season list. Montgomery had two draw wins today, adding to her single-season record. She has won 160 draws in her career, 12 behind the record of 172 held by Lucy Johnson '12. Her 75 career caused turnovers are eighth on William Smith's all-time list.

Today was the last game for William Smith's lone senior
Bizzer Gahagan. She finished her career with a 64-18 overall record. The 64 wins are the most by a graduating senior. Gahagan guided the Herons to four Liberty League titles and four NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the quarterfinals. Gahagan played in 69 career games, recording 60 goals and 22 assists for 82 points. She brought in 37 ground balls, had 10 caused turnovers and won 48 draws.
