ITHACA, N.Y. — The Hobart College Tennis team fell 5-0 to second-seed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the semifinal match at Cornell University's Reis Tennis Center this afternoon. The Statesmen complete the 2018-19 season with a 13-7 overall record.
The Engineers took a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. Senior
Jonathan Atwater and first-year
Jack Ledford fell to Dylan Payne and Zack Ebenfeld 8-2 in the No. 2 spot. Junior
Alan Dubrovsky and sophomore
Walker Anderson fell 8-3 to Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie in the No. 1 spot. First-year
Thomas Shung and junior
Colin Molloy fell at No. 3 to Eddie Wu and Suryansh Patel 8-5.
The Engineers clinched the match in singles play. Molloy fell to Zack Ebenfeld 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Shung fell at No. 5 to Victor Stoyanov 6-4, 6-0. Dubrovsky dropped the first set in the top spot 6-4 to Castillo-Sanchez and was behind 4-1 when the match was clinched. Atwater dropped the first set 6-3 to Imrie and was leading 2-0 in the No. 2 spot. Anderson forced a third set battling Yudai Teruyama at No.3, but the match was called at 2-6, 6-1, 1-1. Ledford dropped the first set 7-5 to Payne at No. 4, but was leading 4-2 when the match was called.
Today's contest was the final match for seniors
Jonathan Atwater and
David Reinharz. Reinharz compiled a 10-12 record in singles play and 6-12 record in doubles play during his career. Atwater compiled a 64-29 record in singles play and a 50-43 record in doubles play. Atwater was 20-8 in conference play throughout his career.
