Cary’s golden goal lifts Statesmen past Violets

GENEVA, N.Y-Senior Nate Cary's goal with 3:47 remaining in the second overtime lifted the Hobart College soccer team to a 2-1 victory over New York University on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Statesmen are now 2-0-0 this season.

In the 107th minute, junior Pete Critchlow forced a turnover at the top of the 18-yard box and threaded a pass between two defenders to Cary. Cary turned and fired a shot past Nick Vafiadis' right foot into the left corner of the goal. It was Cary's third career game-winning goal.

The Violets (0-2-0) dominated the first half of this afternoon's contest outshooting Hobart 10-2. New York University jumped on the Statesmen right from the opening whistle. Matteo Russo broke into the offensive zone and fired a shot towards the bottom right corner of the cage. Brian Salazar was there to make a diving stop. In the 23rd minute, the Violets were awarded a penalty kick. Sergio Monton fired his attempt off the left goal post.

The Statesmen took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Senior Binjo Emmanuel converted on a penalty kick driving a shot home into left corner of the goal. New York University answered three minutes later on a strike from Oliver Kleban. He dribbled around a defender into the 18-yard box and flipped a shot over Salazar into the upper half of the cage. It was his first goal of the season.

Hobart had both shots of the first extra session but did not convert. Cary missed wide left on a shot from 15 yards out and Critchlow fired a shot just over the crossbar.

NYU finished the game with a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Salazar made a career-high six stops as he improved to 2-0-0 on the season. Vafiadis made one save in goal for NYU.

Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 6, when it travels to Plattsburgh, N.Y., for the Best Western Plus Cardinal Classic. The Statesmen will take on the host Cardinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
