GENEVA, N.Y.- The Hobart College soccer team was edged by Rochester 1-0 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 6-2-0 overall this season.
Hobart had the game's first major scoring opportunity in the third minute. Senior
Tristan Cornell Roberts collected a long arching pass from his own zone, beat his defender, and dribbled the ball into the box. He fired a shot on cage that was turned aside by Hugh Curran. One minute later, junior
Jack Fell had a scoring chance from just outside the box turned aside by Curran.
Rochester (5-2-0) scored the game's lone goal in the 32nd minute. Josh Cooley redirected a bouncing ball past
Brian Salazar and into the back of the net. The game-winning goal was Cooley's second goal of the season. The Yellowjackets continued to apply the pressure in the offensive zone and nearly doubled their lead four minutes later. Cristian Baltier's shot from 18 yards out was punched aside by Salazar.
Senior
Cooper O'Connell had a chance for the equalizer in the closing stages of the first half but his shot was blocked.
Sophomore
Nick Kriak had the Statesmen's best chance of the second half, but his shot in the 60th minute was saved by Curran.
Hobart finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots. Both teams earned three corner kicks.
Salazar played all 90 minutes in goal and made six saves. Curran stopped three shots as he earned the shutout.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when it welcomes Rochester Institute of Technology to Cozzens Field. The game will be the Liberty League opener for both teams.
