Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Rochester blanks #1 Herons

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-The top ranked William Smith College soccer team was defeated by Rochester 1-0 in a non-conference contest at Fauver Stadium this evening. The Herons are now 4-1-1 on the season.

William Smith had the game's first scoring opportunity in the 10th minute. Junior Amanda Adams had a shot from the top of the 18-yard box blocked.  On the ensuing corner kick, first-year Katrine Berg headed a shot off of the crossbar. Rochester's best chance of the first half came off the foot of Madison Drenowatz. Her shot was stopped by Amanda Kesler. Junior Merilyn Hinrichs had an opportunity in the 44th minute that was smothered by Emma Schechter.

Drenowatz made the most of her next opportunity. She broke into the 18-yard box, faked out Kesler and slid a shot into the back of the net. It was her seventh goal of the season. William Smith nearly tied the game in the closing minutes but junior Julia Keogh's shot was turned aside by Schechter.

William Smith finished the game with a 10-5 edge in shots and had all four of the game's corner kicks.

Sophomore Amanda Kesler played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.  Emma Schecter played all 90 minutes in goal for Rochester and also made two saves.

The Herons will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 25, when it travels to take on Rochester Institute of Technology. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and will be the Liberty League opener for both teams.
