GENEVA, N.Y. — The William Smith College field hockey team fell to No. 19 Ursinus this afternoon on McCooey Field. The Herons fell to 0-3 overall this season.
Ursinus scored five minutes into the first quarter, off a shot at the top of the shooting circle from Devon Caroll. Anna Hall was credited with the assist. The Bears recorded eight shots, and junior
Sophie Craig got a shot off with seconds left in the period.
Erin Saybolt increased the Bears' lead to 2-0 with a goal at the end of the first quarter. Ursinus' defense didn't allow the Herons to get a shot off in the second and third quarters.
William Smith's offense came out strong in the first quarter with a penalty corner by sophomore
Elizabeth Jacobia, and a shot from senior
Emma Honey. Kayla Peterson was awarded a penalty stroke, and put the Bears up 4-0 with six minutes left in the game. The Herons had their best scoring opportunity off a strong pass from Honey. Senior
Kelsey Pierce attempted to get the ball over the goalie but Addie Frey stopped the ball out of the air.
Junior
Alexandra DeVito faced saved ten shots, and Frey stopped three for the win.
The Herons will be back in action next weekend for the 2019 William Smith Classic. The Herons will face Manhattanville Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10:30 a.m., and Lebanon Valley Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., on McCooey Field.
