CORTLAND, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Cortland 4-2 in a non-conference contest at Alumni Arena this afternoon. The Herons wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-7-0 overall record.

Cortland (10-3-1) was led by Grace Schnorr, who scored twice. Danny Donegan (1g, 1a), Jayden Kelley (2a) and Molly McCabe (1g, 1a) also finished the contest with two points each. Chelsea Allain started in goal for Cortland and made 21 saves as she earned her seventh victory of the season.

Junior
Emily Martino had the first scoring opportunity of the game, but her shot from the point was stopped by Allain. William Smith opened the scoring at the 12:40 mark of the first period. Canney wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle into the back of the net. Gong and Scibetta were credited with assists on Canney's third goal of the season.

Six minutes later, the Red Dragons tied the game on Molly McCabe's first goal of the season. Standing in front of the cage, she knocked a loose puck across the goal line. Elena Eichmann recorded an assist on the goal.

Cortland took control of the game in the second period, finishing the frame with a 17-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Dragons took a 2-1 lead on Schnorr's first goal of the game. Twenty-three seconds into a power play opportunity, she fired a shot from the slot past Williams for her 14th goal of the season. Donegan and Katie DeVoe were awarded assists on the goal. Just over two minutes later, Donegan beat the buzzer, firing home a rebound to give Cortland a 3-1 lead. The goal at the 19:59 mark of the period was assisted by McCabe and Kelley.

At the 7:08 mark of the third period, Schnorr gave the Red Dragons a three goal lead. She blasted a shot from the right circle past Williams for her 15th goal of the season. Olivia Wilburn and Kelley were credited with assists on the goal.

LaPlante made it a two-goal game with her team leading sixth goal of the season. She redirected a shot from Gong past Allain into the goal. Scibetta notched the secondary assist on the goal. William Smith pulled Williams in favor of the extra attacker, but they were unable to draw any closer.

Cortland finished the game with a 40-23 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Dragons were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Herons were 0-for-1 with the extra skater.

William Smith will return to The Cooler this weekend, Jan. 18-19, when it welcomes Alvernia and Stevenson for a pair of United Collegiate Hockey Conference contests. The Herons will take on the Golden Wolves on Saturday and the Mustangs on Sunday. Faceoff in both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
