Gallagher paces Herons against Saints

CANTON, N.Y.—Senior Emma Gallagher scored a season-high 15 points, but St. Lawrence University rode Katie Frederick's game-high 28-point effort to a 70-54 Liberty League women's basketball victory over William Smith College this afternoon.

Gallagher was 2-of-3 from 3-point range and 5-of-10 shooting overall. She also made all three of her free throws and blocked two shots. Junior Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. First-year Lauren DeVaney chipped in 10 points.

Frederick's season-high scoring performance saw her go 12-of-19 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the line. She also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, leading the Saints to a 34-30 edge on the glass. Frederick was the only Saint in double figures. Caroline Rodi hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

SLU (11-5, 7-2) shot 40% from the field, including 8-of-19 from beyond the arc, and 76.9% at the line. William Smith (9-7, 5-4) shot 32.8%, struggling from long range. Excluding Gallagher, the Herons were 1-of-19 from deep. The Herons made 75% of their free throws.

The game turned in the second quarter. The Saints hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 21-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. St. Lawrence carried that momentum throughout the second quarter, outscoring William Smith 17-5. Frederick scored eight points in the quarter, including the first six.

SLU led 38-23 at halftime.

The Saints maintained a double digit lead throughout the third quarter. Despite trailing by as many as 18 in the second half, the Herons rallied to trim their deficit to eight with about 5 minutes remaining. Six straight points, including four from sophomore Olivia Parisi (9 pts, 3 rebs, 4 assts, 3 stls), made it a 60-52 game. St. Lawrence squashed any hopes of a comeback by scoring the game's next 10 points.

William Smith will return to Bristol Gym to host Ithaca (10-5, 7-2) on Friday, Jan. 31.
